Nine Greek-Lettered Organizations Respond to President-Elect Obama's Call to Service on January 19th

Chicago, IL (BlackNews.com) - Over 100,000 members from the nine Greek-lettered organizations -- representing over two million African-American college-educated men and women -- will fan out to communities nationwide and engage in service projects on Monday,January 19, in honor of Dr. King.

The mobilization represents a show of support of President-Elect Obama's
call for volunteers and organizations to serve on this day set aside to
honor Dr. King. The areas around which the service activities revolve
include Health, Education, the Environment, Economics and Politics. Each
organization has incorporated these critical areas into their respective
programs and their Day of Service initiatives reflect a devotion to these
areas.

The organizations, affectionately known as the "Divine Nine," that will be
participating are:

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.

From coast-to-coast in communities, at social service centers, homeless
shelters and havens for youth, the members will leave their imprint
and show their support.

Barbara A. McKinzie, international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Chairman of the Council of Presidents, which represents the Divine Nine,declared, "With our combined memberships representing over two million people - and with our reach and influence forcing that number to multiply --members will demonstrate our ability to heed the call to service in a way that makes a significant impact on the communities we serve."
